[Battle]
Day two. Morning. Reports came in that General Guizar was seen heading toward the west gate and simultaneously, the cavalry corps was advancing towards the central gate. [1]
In response, the Empire dispatched Major Simant, Captain Macazar, and Captain Bize to the west gate.
“Captain Lorenzo, please take Kaku’zu with you and head to the west gate. They will need your support.”
“B-but, are you sure you’ll be fine here?”
At the central gate, where they were stationed, the cavalry corps led by Cavalry Commander Nidel aggressively pushed back imperial soldiers in front of the gate. Behind them, the magic squads under Infantry Commander Noyudata were in meditation, gathering magic power.
“…He’s stronger than I anticipated.”
Although the principality’s commander rank equated to the Empire’s captain rank, Hazen observed that Cavalry Commander Nidel’s true strength surpassed his official position. Hazen estimated Nidel’s prowess could elevate him to the rank of a major.
“Nevertheless, I can handle him. Leave this place to me and head for the west gate.”
“…All right.”
With that, Captain Lorenzo hurried away, with Kaku’zu trailing behind him. Seeing them off, Hazen shifted his attention to the cavalry corps’ assault from atop of the gate.
“Guess I should get moving, too,” Hazen muttered, jumping off the gate. In his hand was his magic wand the Floatwing, which had the ability to reduce the user’s weight to zero, enabling him to float.
Then, he waved another magic wand at the cavalry corps.
““““Agh!””””
Instantly, the horses’ legs gave way, causing them to topple over and bringing their riders down with them.
“Kh, shoot him down!”
Nidel’s cavalry corps switched their weapons to bows and fired arrows at Hazen, but none of them reached him. Every time Hazen swung his magic wand, the arrows lost their momentum before falling back down to the ground.
“Now, charge!”
As if on cue, the 8th Platoon led by Warrant Officer Vass rushed the collapsed cavalries, systematically reaping their lives. Seeing that, the rest of the 2nd Battalion followed suit, charging toward the enemy lines.
Meanwhile, Hazen landed in front of Cavalry Commander Nidel.
“Two magic wands? You must be pretty skilled.”
“Personally, I don’t think it’s that impressive.”
“One magic wand has the ability to float, and the other can manipulate the wind—am I correct?”
“Wrong. One reduces weight, allowing floating, and the other can multiply the gravity in a specific area.”
The magic staff ‘Groundbind’ could affect a radius of 30 meters square, and multiply gravity by a maximum of three times. With a 10th-grade jewel, this was its limit. However, it was enough to do simple tricks like tripping galloping horses.
“……Gravity?”
“It’s a force that—actually, you know what? I’ll spare you the explanation. It will prove pointless, since you are going to die.”
“…Are you Hazen Heim?”
“Ah, but of course, I’ll spare your life if you surrender.”
“Ridiculous. You think you can make me surrender?”
“Will you surrender if I can?”
“No, I have sworn to live and die as a soldier of the Principality of Diord.”
“That’s a shame. A magician of your caliber would be very valuable. Guess I’ll be taking your head.” Hazen’s eyes narrowed sharply.
Observing him in silence for a moment, Cavalry Commander Nidel said, “…Before we begin, I’ve got one thing I want to ask you.”
“Well, ask away.”
“Archer Commander Kohanawan. Were you the one who killed him?”
“Yes, he was a really excellent archer. I had to kill him before he caused too much casualties on our side.”
“…One more reason.”
“Hm?”
“That’s one more reason for me to kill you. He was my best friend.”
“Oh, sure.” Answering nonchalantly, Hazen assumed his battle stance.
“…!” At the sight, Cavalry Commander Nidel exclaimed involuntarily, “Y-you, what, that–?!” he pointed behind Hazen, where 8 magic wands floated.
“I guess it’s really rare for a magician to wield multiple magic wands on this continent, huh?”
When Hazen tossed back the Groundbind, another magic wand settled in his hand.
“Kh…” Cavalry Commander Nidel raised his magic wand.
But right at that moment, Hazen leaped over him, easily making it high into the sky, utilizing Floatwing.
And then, he hurled the new harpoon-shaped magic wand toward the ground. It rapidly cut through the air, and the moment it made contact with the ground, the cavalries in the area were annihilated without a trace, a huge crater was left in the aftermath. The terrifying display of power left Cavalry Commander Nidel stunned speechless.
“Sorry, I don’t want them to disturb us, so.”
“…Cavalry corps, stay away! And you, take back your magic wand.”
“I’ll do that later. ‘Crimson Lotus’ is a magic wand specialized for a single powerful strike. It can only be used once a day, so I can’t use it anymore.”
“…You’re going to fight me without it?”
“Well, I rarely get to partake in an actual combat. There’s a variety of things I’ve been waiting to try out.” Hazen smiled with no hint of fear on his face.
[1] Guizar previously ordered the cavalry corps to attack the west gate. Double-checked the raw and it still says the same.
